Of Lunch and Lights …

Sometimes it’s good just to meet up with people who share the zest for travel, the outdoors, and the chance to escape the day-to-day.  If your method of escape is TCs (truck campers), then it’s great to have lunch with local members of NATCOA!  We had the opportunity to do just that … at one of the local buffet shops, Golden Corral.  Over steak, ribs, stir fry and cotton candy, we swapped stories, compared options on our rigs, and learned of recent trips.  Some have put their RVs away for the winter, but many of us are just getting started.  One couple just got back from Hauser Lake – and they reported sunny weather and a quiet weekend.  Nice.

Yup … tucking into the first of many platters of food …

As we talked of things great and small, Rich (otherwise known as “fearless leader”) directed out attention to LEDs from Doug of LEDTrailerLights.com.  We’ve the opportunity to check ‘em out – bright white LEDs that just plug in where your 1141 bulb used to be.

Straight swap … out with the old and in with the new

Easy peasy

Nice.  The old bulbs get hot and burn 18-27 watts … the LEDs only 3.6 watts, and of course, remain cool.  Light up the night in your RV without draining your battery!

Other topics?  Well, there’s a winter weekend coming up in January at Schweitzer Resort, then the Spring rally over on the westside (that’s what ya’all can call the Seattle/Tacoma area of the state), and the rally at Glacier in the summer.  Yes, it’s good to have a group of folks who share your enthusiasms!

We missed the stories of XNORP and Lady C … hopefully next time.  And, for readers, XNORP is not a computer related reference … oh this is a great story, maybe he’ll let us put it up sometime.

Work is done … commitments have been fulfilled … and it’s time to say goodbye, yet again.  But before we leave, there might be time for some local pizza … this time at “Escape From New York”.  It’s a hole in the wall kinda place, serving whole pies as well as pizza by the slice.  Originally put together by a group of friends – one who had actually escaped from New York – they now have 6 stores in the city serving thin crust, goooood pizza.  There were three of us, and we got a large that was half cheese and half Big Applewood Chicken.  You know what was on the cheese side … but the other part had bbq chicken, applewood bacon, fresh tomato on top of cheddar and smokey bbq sauce.  It was big … and now it’s gone.  Yum.

We went to the Mission store … sit outside or in …

Big pies, get a slice …

After talking, eating, talking and talking … and a small nap … it is indeed time to say goodbye.  With a truck camper, it is so easy to drive around and take a last look at the sights.  We spent the evening at Lincoln Park …

… at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor …

… at Lands End.  Perhaps the most beautiful setting for an evening of remembrances, this building is a replica of the Palais de la Legion d’Honneur in Paris.  This one is nicer, simply because it has American plumbing!  And, parking here with a TC and a cup of hot tea … well, it’s nice to say the least.

The Golden Gate in the evening

Just a few steps away is a gorgeous view of the Golden Gate bridge … alive with light and activity.  Great city.  Goodnight.  Oh … don’t park here though!

This is the West, after all.  So, when they circle the wagons in San Francisco, something must be going on.

So — if you’re in a TC, just camp out down by Crissy Field or Marina Green, then head over to Fort Mason (Friday nights only).  The food trucks are circling …

It’s a sign that something is going on …

Tonto … the wagons are circling.  What can it mean?

They’re lining up …

… and forming a big circle …

… and the crowds are rushing to them.  Indian food … Vietnamese … Korean … Curry … Burgers … Pork Belly sandwiches … Flan  … Cupcakes … oh, and much, much more.  Inside the circle, and on the edges are tents serving and cooking.  And indeed, the natives are restless!

The barbie is fired up, and chicken is on the menu boys!

the tents are serving up their wares …

Find something tasty, grab a chair, and relax … off the grid, of course.  We chose wisely … Bombzies BBQ (pictured above, BBQing chicken) serving Vietnamese BBQ; then Alicia’s Tamales (we got chicken again) – stuffed with love.

A little rice, a LOT of chicken, a little kimchi on top …

Vietnamese chicken BBQ was $9 (it was more than enough for 2); Alicia’s Tamale was $3.50 … and was maybe the best ever.  Homemade … made with love … and soooo good I ate it before I could snap a picture.

More trucks inside the circle.

A band started playing while everyone mingled and asked each other: “where did you get that?”  It was good fun … crowded, tasty, and a perfect way to end a work week.  If you’re ever camping down SF way on a Friday, the “circling of the wagons” goes from 5:00 to 10:00 at Fort Mason – don’t miss this.

Heading down I-5, a favorite quick stop is in Canyonville OR, at the Seven Feathers Casino “Dry RV Lot”.

Wakey wakey …. early morning in the dry lot.

Not far down the road is Sunny Valley … with this wonderful covered bridge.

Picture perfect …

Then we get to lunch in Merlin with the best friends a human being can have.

Down on the farm … peace and quiet

Now, how about something sweet for the road trip?  It’s time to visit Cary’s in Grants Pass for possibly the finest toffee creations in the world!  DO NOT pass this by – this is a must stop if you are on I-5.  Artisan english toffee – yes!

Click to read about Cary’s

Chai toffee … milk chocolate and dark covered … with hazelnuts, almonds and more.

Now with the ole sweet tooth satisfied, we journey on. We are in the State of Jefferson! Haven’t heard of it? Read about their lack of political representation here.

Yup … here’s a marker to the state!

While we reflect on this in our “office with a view”, we thank God for the freedom of our TC.  And … we head on down the road to one of those mega-cities.

Gotta get down to St. John Washington … for the August Sprint Boat races.  To refresh your memory of what this is all about, go back to “Racing in the Water“.

The Palouse

The Palouse is beautiful any time of the year

Palouse barns

Old barns … baking in the relentless sun

Palouse graveyard

Silent sentinels on the sleepy country road

Every time I make this drive, I vow to come back and spend a week gathering photos … but the business of life presses too hard.  While digesting this fact, we enter the town of St. John – and the street is lined with sprint boats and their towing partners …  a 4×4 Jeep club.  There’s precious little room to drive through … as sightseers, pit crews, drivers, navigators and mechanics mingle and talk racing.

Wicked Racing

Cara (navigator) and Dan (driver) hang out by one of the quickest boats on the circuit

Cara, who teaches 2nd grade when she’s not racing, is also assisting in the curriculum for a mission effort in Mexico!  Wicked’s superboat will be shaking out the bugs on a new engine (500+hp) in the race day warmups.

Wicked Racing Superboat

That’s a lot of power in a itty bitty boat!

Dreamcatcher

The racing seats also must keep your head where it’s supposed to be!

Fat Buddy team

The Canadians field a huge team – also a helicopter and lots of equipment in their familiar orange and black!

Most importantly is the food in St. John.  EVERYONE recommends the huge crab salad … but we head for the St. John Health Mart!  It’s like an old fashioned drug store, with a real soda fountain!  There we find $1 ice cream cones … a little more if you want a big ole waffle cone stuffed with ice cream.  It seems like every person has a cone in their hand – a perfect ending on a hot day.

St. John Health Mart

Yes, it’s huckleberry …

The soda fountain alone is worth the side trip if you’re ever in the St. John area!  Well, we must continue on up to Webb’s Slough – on the western edge of town.  Again, it looks like an RV city – and the racing doesn’t start until tomorrow.

RV city indeed

RV’s are pouring in … all boondocking.

TC in the pits

And the “office with a view” sets up in the pit area

It’s a great time to relax, check out the race course, meet up with our four-wheeling friends.

Webb's Slough

The course looks calm tonight

Morning comes early … and it’s nice to be in a TC.  A little breakfast, a spot of tea, then it’s off to the drivers meeting, setup of the Jeeps, and pulling boats into the water to do their final tuning and checks.

Drivers meeting

Drivers, navigators, crews and pit people get their safety instructions, last minute tips, and a healthy dose of prayer.

The lineup

Jeeps to the ready!

Most of the tow Jeeps have hitches on the front … makes for a quicker load and unload into the water.

Tow 'em in

Just get me to the church on time!

Time to test

Hundreds of HP pushing back against the Jeeps.

And soon it’s race time!  four trial heats, then a race off between the top 8, then the top 4, then the finals.  Boats in and out of the water – lots of action and crashes … a good time was had by all.

Jolly Roger

Let’s race!

That’s the Jolly Rogers team … Eric driving, Jana navigating.  At the end of the day, Jolly Rogers prevailed with an amazing time of 58.195!  They cut all the corners very tight, have the best starts (straight and fast), and don’t make mistakes!  This win puts them in the lead of the “Super Mods”.  Check it out here.

Here’s the navigator at work – check out the white glove.  Turning through the hairpin turns, selecting the direction at each “intersection”, cutting the corners tight … the navigator must memorize every nuance.  There were a couple of teams that went the whole day with “DNF” status – that is, did not finish.  Took a few wrong turns, they did.

The white glove

Turn here, NOW.

Notice the starter in the red t-shirt … and look at him run below.  In a fraction of a second a boat missed the turn and came crashing his way.

Gotta go ...

Close call for the starter.

Saved by the bale of hay!  It was a day of missed turns … and other misadventures!  A challenging course indeed.  Below, in a fraction of a second, a boat misses a turn, goes out of the water, flips over and crashes.  The safety crew was there in a flash – everybody got out OK.

Crash

Turning over …

crash

… turned over …

If you’ve got a truck camper … or any RV, this is a must on your bucket list.

webbs

A day in the sun …

speed

… watching skill and speed …

Fat Buddy

… listening to the roar of the engines, and the crowd.

And for us, when it was all over, and the awards presented, and special rides were complete, then it was time for the 4×4′s.

Jeeps at play

Yes, after the work, it’s time for Jeeps to play. Wha … is that a Nissan in there?

The “office with a view” again had a great view.  There was time in the evening to pick up a few emails, respond to client requests, and sleep soundly.  Why, we even needed the heat at night – it got down to 49 degrees!

Up early with time for a side trip to Jackson.

Grand Teton, Middle Teton and South Teton. This is the view from the office this morning.

Most of our office work this morning is phone consultation … to there’s a little time to explore.  The cyclists are off – climbing mountains in the cool of the morning.

Antler arches … 4 of them, at the entrances to the central plaza.

Maybe this is the precursor of the truck camper???

Across from the Elk Refuge is an amazing Museum of Wildlife Art … not to be missed!

It’s still early … and the local 20 somethings are breakfasting here …

A crowd at a place to eat is a good sign …

But somehow, even with the crowd, it’s not exactly what we’re looking for.  But … on the other side of the plaza we find a GREAT bakery … named “e.leaven”

This is a MUST stop in Jackson!

Just out of the oven … smoked ham and swiss croissant … eat ‘em here, or take ‘em to go!

Also spinach and feta, turkey and provalone … all just out of the oven.  BIG, perfect flavors, and a mere $3.95.  Oh, don’t pass this up!

Fresh desserts too …

Yup – we took them to go.  The croissants were huge … and coupled with a lemon meringue, we were filled.  Total around $12 with tax for two – good stuff.

Nuthin’ like a sunrise Easter service!  Then, while it’s still veeerrry early, a spot of breakfast.  Well, wheeling the truck camper into Liberty Lake Washington, there’s a house that serves breakfast and lunch only – Barlows.  Beautiful house, just a block away from the big strip mall in LibLake … and it’s open!

A little espresso … a little breakfast too … awesome place!

We’ve only got the camera phone with us … but check it out.  Family owned, right next to the transit stop in a building that looks like a home. There’s a dining room area, and a coffee shop area … where you can also dine. Twin brothers usually operate the floor … a couple of guys with a fun loving sense of humor, and great attention to customers needs. Truly, this is like visiting family for breakfast. On the tables are baskets of reading glasses … yes, reading glasses! for our ever increasing population who need a little eye assistance – there they are, so that you can read without dragging out your own pair. Cute.

Next to the salt n pepper – a basket of reading glasses!

Well, tried the eggs Benedict – perfectly cooked, mild meats and subtle flavored sauce – oh, this is very very good. Also tried the German Sausage and eggs (not on the menu – ask for it) – again, everything perfectly cooked … all the flavors . Now, this is a MUST visit place – because the cooks know how to cook – the flavors are subtle instead of the over salted plates of overpowering flavored combinations that the whole restaurant world seems to be doing now (we just came from a few nights ago of Kobe beef burger with butter lettuce and avocado that was overpowered by blue cheese, masses of bacon and mustard sauces – whew).

Eggs Benedict – PERFECTLY cooked!

Now, after a night at the Post Falls Idaho Walmart (the one at the Washington border), or at Cabelas (next door), an early morning trip to Barlows has got to be on your trip plan!  Both the Wallys’ and Cabelas are parking lots with a view.  This is an amazing part of the Northwest!

Projects come to completion … on time and under budget.  Even with a mobile office, and the greatest view in the world, one project completes and another bubbles to the top.  While the TC brings the office, home, and restaurant right along with you, the time comes when one must move inexorably onward and it’s that time now.  Oh, we like our SF Bay area clients, and we like their city – but the TC office needs a new view.

Stuffed full of ice cream, fresh pineapple and coconut, then topped with whipped creme ...

Perhaps a little treat is in order … and Crepe Temptations on Judah by 31st Avenue might just be the place. This place looks like the “Voodoo Donuts” of crepes.  Crepes filled with hamburgers or breakfast stuff … or ice cream treats.

We went late in the evening for an ice cream treat. Crepes are all done while you wait. The Pina Colada, with coconut ice cream, lots of pineapple, whipped cream and shaved coconut, was big enough for two, priced around $6. Great ice cream, lots of fruit and whipped cream – a magnificent way to celebrate!

Steamed, hot, chicken buns

This might be the best and cheapest lunch in the United States. Or it could be your breakfast … or maybe brunch.  Eat in, or eat it on the run.

The place is called Happy Bakery, the lunch is Gai Bow. That means “chicken bun” – and it’s 80 cents. Splurge and get two – but you’ll get full.

The bread is a steamed slightly sweet fresh tasting, melt in your mouth delight. Inside are huge chicken pieces with spices … moist, perfectly cooked, and lightly spiced. Not salty, but absolutely full of mild chicken flavor. Now, if you want, you can add to your lunch fare with other Dim Sum favorites: beef sui mai; veggie dumplings … look around and try things out. Everything is fresh, hot, and tasty!

This is just a block away from Golden Gate Park … walk on over. On Irving Street near 24th Avenue.  No English spoken here … just point at what you want.

Monday

Here’s a chronicle of another Monday at work, in the mobile office.  The trouble with an office that has a great view is that it is often distracting.  So, to make up for lost time, one must work late into the evening.  Then, with early client calls – well, it simply works up an appetite by noon.  Sometimes that appetite calls

Giant burritos … yes they are packed with meat! Oh, my …

out for something big … something special … something Mexican!

It’s time for El Burrito Express, perhaps the biggest of the giant burritos.  Of course, it’s crowded at lunch … all the local High School lunchers are there. They know great Mexican food … and good prices (even if the parents are paying).

Well, we ordered up a couple of biggies – the Chicken/sour cream express (on the left), and the Carnitas Bronco – with awesome avocado (wrapped, on the right). A bottle of Mango soda to wash it down. It was a meal sized for 4, but we did it … (then napped the afternoon away). There is WAAAY too much food here … and every bite is tender and full of meat!  It is finished indeed!

After the HS lunch rush, the store fills up with local contractors – they also know great tasting food at reasonable prices!

This tiny spot is on Taravel Street at 21st. Make sure you park legally, the traffic patrol is ferocious. Of course, there’s lots of places in the neighborhood where a truck camper can park. Recommendation is to get an express burrito, split it, and add a Mexican soda. That’s be approximately $9 for 2.
